Requirements for Board Certification
Board Certification in Orthopedic Surgery from the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopedic Surgery (AOBOS), requires completion of a written examination, an oral examination, and a clinical review, consisting of a chart audit and observation of surgical cases.
The applicant must meet minimum requirements outlined in the Handbook section on Requirements for Board Certification to be eligible for certification in Orthopedic Surgery by the American Osteopathic Association and be recommended by the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
Beginning in 1994, certification is time limited to ten (10) years. The AOBOS Recertification information is available through another page on this website.
All the necessary information and application documents regarding the certification process are contained within the Handbook for Candidates for Board Certification. Please read it carefully! If your Handbook does not have this year's date, you should check the website for updated versions.
Certification: Application for Written Examination
To send an Application for Written Examination to the AOBOS, fill out the form from "Online Application Forms". You must submit via credit card an examination fee of one thousand five hundred dollars ($1,500.00).
Certification: Application for Oral Examination
To send an Application for Oral Examination to the AOBOS, fill out the form from "Online Application Forms". You must submit via credit card an examination fee of one thousand five hundred dollars ($1,500.00).
Certification: Application for Clinical Examination
To send an Application for Clinical Examination to the AOBOS, fill out the form from "Online Application Forms". You must submit via credit card an examination fee of two thousand seven hundred fifty dollars ($2,750.00).
You Must Also Submit Via Mail the Following:
- Typewritten or computer printed logs. These logs shall include all cases (major/minor) performed for at least (12) twelve consecutive months since entering orthopedic practice using the most recent 12 to 24-month period. To be accepted - NO LESS THAN 200 MAJOR CASES must be documented.
- A completed log summary sheet (found in your Handbook for Candidates for Board Certification).
- A Hospital Location sheet (found in your Handbook for Candidates for Board Certification).
- A copy of your unrestricted state license.
- Affidavit from hospital administrator or medical director attesting that your practice is 75% orthopedic medical and surgical practice.
- Copy of Fellowship Certificate, if applicable.
For Summer Examination the Deadline for Application is February 15 - Logs received after February 15th will be returned.
For Winter Examination the Deadline for Application is August 15 - Logs received after August 15th will be returned.
The Application for clinical examination and your logs will be reviewed by the Board and notification of acceptance or denial will be given approximately two (2) months prior to the examination.
